Bungie, the developer behind the popular game franchise Destiny, has announced its first new project in over a decade: Marathon. This sci-fi PvP extraction shooter will take players on a journey as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches, fame, and infamy. Marathon is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC with full cross-play and cross-save.
In an interview with Marathon General Manager Scott Taylor and Game Director Christopher Barrett, they revealed that the game is not a direct sequel to the original Marathon games, but rather a new game that belongs in the same universe. The team has a tremendous amount of respect for the original games and wants to honor the mythology, story, and themes of the world while also creating something new.
Marathon is designed as a PvP-focused game and won’t have a single-player campaign. Instead, the team is creating opportunities for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative. The game will feature persistent, evolving zones where players create their own journey with every run they take. The actions of players can have ramifications for the world and players with each unfolding season.
While there is still a lot of work to do before launch, the team is excited to be able to share what they’ve been working on. They are constantly updating their Bungie Careers page with new roles as needed and are looking for talented individuals to join their team. The next time fans hear from Bungie about Marathon, they will be able to see gameplay and will be much closer to launch.
