A strong earthquake occurred on Monday evening off the coast of eastern Taiwan, said the Central Weather Bureau, with tremors in the capital Taipei, but without immediate damage reports.
The weather bureau said the quake had a magnitude of 6 , 0 and was struck at a relatively shallow depth of 19 kilometers (12 miles). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the magnitude to be 6.2 higher.
The epicenter was given in the sea 35 miles east of the coastal city of Hualien.
An AFP reporter in Taipei said buildings were rocking violently when the quake hit at 5:46 pm (0946 GMT) during rush hour.
« The shaking lasted a good 20 seconds, with the ground moving left and right, » the reporter said.
Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes because the island is close to the junction of two tectonic plates.
Some earthquakes of this magnitude can prove fatal, although much depends on where and at what depth the quake hits.
