Washington Capitals captain and striker Alex Ovechkin left Monday night’s game against New York Rangers with a lower body injury and will not return, the team announced.

Ovechkin stepped first on Monday Time since April 22nd when he was out with a lower body injury:

Alex Ovechkin has missed the last four games. He returned tonight, but it didn’t take long.

Ovechkin played a 39-second shift in the first phase before leaving the game.

The 35-year-old remains Washington’s most dynamic player as he started on Monday with 24 goals and 18 assists in 43 games.

Although he struggled occasionally in the 2016/17 season – his 33 goals were the fewest he has scored in a non-lockout season, his 3.82 shots per game were the lowest mark of his career and he was was even downgraded to third. During the postseason that year he opened the 2017/18 season on fire, scoring 13 goals in the team’s first 18 games.

A resurgent Ovechkin was a huge plus for a Capitals team, which would win a Stanley Cup for the first time in 2018. In total, he scored 49 goals and 38 assists this season and re-established himself as one of the dominant forces and offensive juggernauts of the game. He built on this in the 2018/19 season with 51 goals and 38 assists.

Ovechkin cannot be replaced in Washington. His absence will be tough for the capitals to overcome if the injury becomes severe on Monday.

The Dallas Star is on IR after hip replacement and is a game-time decision against Panthers 👀 Penguins Star tonight will be back on the line-up tonight against Flyers after missing 23 games with an injury
