CM – Amazon Web Services acquires Signal’s rival, encrypted messaging app Wickr

Washington: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has a messaging application Wickr. The messaging application, founded in 2012, attaches great importance to encryption.

The Amazon subsidiary AWS made the decision official through a social media post. The post states: « We are pleased to announce that AWS has acquired Wickr, an innovative company that has developed the most secure, end-to-end encrypted communications technology in the industry. »

AWS Vice President Stephen Schmidt said the acquisition will help the company expand its relationship with the military and Washington in general, saying that Wickr’s functions “enable security-conscious companies and government agencies to implement critical governance and security controls to help them meet their compliance requirements. «

The Wickr messaging application competes with signals such as Signal in providing encryption. The application was even used by journalists and whistleblowers.

Schmidt stated that the acquisition was influenced, at least in part, by the need to maintain information security while working remotely. « With the move to hybrid work environments, partly due to COVID-19, businesses and government agencies have a growing desire to protect their communications, » he wrote.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but Schmidt finalized the note, adding that AWS (Amazon Web Services) will start offering Wickr services immediately and current Wickr users would not see any significant changes for the time being.
