The April 26th Google Doodle celebrates the life of British scientist and author Anne McLaren on her 94th birthday. McLaren is often viewed as one of the most rigorous reproductive biologists of the 20th century, particularly due to her basic research on embryology that paved the way for the development of in vitro fertilization technology (IVF).

Anna McLaren was born on April 26, 1927, grew up in London and played a small role in H.G. Wells’ 1936 science fiction film, The Shape of Things to Come. In her 2054 scene, her great-grandfather raised her about « the advancement of space technology that brought mice to the moon, » according to Newsweek. McLaren reportedly viewed this experience as an early inspiration for her love of science.
The science enthusiast studied zoology at Oxford University, where she learned from prominent biologists such as Peter Medawar, who received the Nobel Prize for his research on the human immune system. McLaren graduated from University College London.
In the 1950s, McLaren worked with mice to delve deeper into the biology of mammalian evolution. « While the subjects of their research were tiny, the impact of their study turned out to be massive, » notes Google Doodle.

According to Newsweek, IVF was first used in humans two decades after the results were published, when the first « IVF baby » Louise Brown was born. At the time, ethics surrounding technology were still controversial.
McLaren was the only scientist on the Warnock Committee, which was formed in 1982 to develop guidelines and safeguards for recent developments in embryology. Meanwhile, McLaren was also a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies and is known to have advocated regulated research on early mammalian and human embryos.
Her role on the committee was instrumental in passing the law on involved the 1990 human fertilization and embryology, which reportedly restricted in vitro culture of human embryos to 14 days after the embryo was formed.
In 1991, McLaren became Secretary of State and later Vice President of the Royal Society, the oldest scientific institution in the world. This made her the first woman to ever hold an office in the institution’s 330-year history.
All of her life, McLaren tried to inspire an interest in science for children and society in general. In 1994 she was elected President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (now the British Science Association). McLaren used the organization to promote science, engineering and technology across the UK and worked to make the topics more accessible.
