Yelich and utility man Jace Peterson have been added to the Covid-19 injured list, David said Stearns, president of Brewers’ baseball operations, on Tuesday, adding that Peterson has been sidelined for contact tracing and has not tested positive.

Yelich – who has been vaccinated against the virus – will be absent for at least 10 days and Peterson for at least seven days from the date he tested positive, Stearns said.

« Definitely disappointing news for Christian, » said Stearns. “The most important thing is that he is better. He has mild symptoms. I spoke to him this morning. He is in a good mood. He is resting, and it is certainly our hope that he can knock that out quickly and that he will feel better quickly.  »

The Brewers activated outfielder Lorenzo Cain from the injured list and called infielder Pablo Reyes of Triple-A Nashville to fill the open squares as they prepared to open a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cain has not played since May 31st due to a strained right Achilles tendon.

The team delayed its scheduled Monday night flight to Pittsburgh and didn’t leave until Tuesday morning to conduct contact tracing and await test results.

Stearns noted that Yelich had vaccinated along with many of his teammates earlier in the season. The Brewers announced on April 5 that much of the team had collectively received the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine.

« He has taken precautions and guidelines seriously throughout the season, » said Stearns. “And unfortunately yesterday he started to develop mild symptoms. He did the right thing and reported these mild symptoms. We had it tested yesterday afternoon. The test was positive and we got a confirmatory test, which was also positive.  »

Yelich played a game within five weeks from mid-April to mid-May due to lower back strain. He beats .235 with six homers, 28 RBIs, and a .367 slugging percentage in 67 games.

« I don’t think this was his overall favorite year, » said Stearns. “He’s been through a lot. When I spoke to him this morning, he was not doing well, but he was in good spirits. It’s just another challenge he’ll overcome. He’ll get through this. He’ll be back on the team. And we’re definitely looking forward to getting it back.  »
