When Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney ordered his teammates to form a circle around Christian Eriksen on the field, he acted partly out of instinct, partly out of experience.

Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest towards the end of the first half against Finland and had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator. He stayed in a Copenhagen hospital on Wednesday but made a good recovery.

“It all happened very quickly. Lots of players reacted very quickly, ”said Delaney. “It was clear to us that Christian was not doing well when he took two steps and fell. So some things had to be done very quickly. (Denmark captain) Simon Kjaer came very quickly and we called for help. ”

Kjaer, who is a close friend of Eriksen and his family, also received a lot of praise for initiating first aid before the paramedics arrived and then comforted the Inter Milan midfielder’s partner as she stepped on the field.

“Simon showed his character. All the players, the entire team, showed character in those long minutes, ”said Delaney. “(Kjaer) takes a lot of pressure on his shoulders and he has done that in the last few days. But we all fought individually in different ways.

“I know it was tough for Simon, it was tough for a lot of people. But to top it off, he has a great personality. We know that and I think a lot of people are seeing that now he gets. « 

Denmark decided to hold their last training session on Wednesday at their base camp outside of Copenhagen instead of the Parken Stadium, where the Finland game was played .

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand admitted that returning to the stadium will be an emotional experience for the players but said they would have the option of taking a team bus to Parken on Wednesday evening to see the area again to process.

« We don’t know how we will react to the return, » said Poulsen. « How it will affect us emotionally and how it will affect us to be there. … It was one Experience that none of us had before on this level, so we will see how each and every person will react to it, because it will be different for each of us. «
