CM – « Eating fallen fruit without washing is dangerous »: AIIMS expert for Nipah

When Kerala saw its first death from the Nipah virus, experts stress the importance of confirming the source of transmission of the virus, which is highly contagious once it passes from animals to humans

Eating windfalls without washing the animal-to-humans first step of spilling, said Dr. Biswas.

When Kerala saw its first death from Nipah virus with the death of a 12-year-old in Kozhikode district, experts stress the importance of confirming the source of transmission of the virus, which is highly contagious, once it skips from animals to humans, where high morbidity and mortality rates have been observed.

According to Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Professor, Department of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the fruit bats are the carriers of the virus.

« Fruit bats are the carriers of the virus and they are the main cause of transmission. Fruit bats live in a specific geographic area Territory. If you fly to other places, this virus can of course be transmitted. We have no special treatment for the disease, « he said.

» So we have to understand that this is a very serious disease and with a high level Morbidity and mortality are linked, « he added.

In addition, Dr. Biswas said that Nipah is a zoonosis and the animals are its vector, especially fruit bats.

» In the past we have seen in India and observed that the fruit bats can also transmit it to our domestic animals such as pigs, goats, cats, horses and other dangerous and is what we call a spillover, « he said.

Mr Biswas emphasized the importance of knowing the source, saying, “As soon as this virus gets into the human circulation, it starts to spread from person to person and the transmission is so rapid that it can spill over. Hence, it is important to identify the source in the beginning. As mentioned earlier, most of the time we’ve found that the transmission came from fruit bats. «

He added that the temptation to eat fallen fruit, especially without washing it, is the first step from which to start animal-to-human transmission begins, and said, « Eating the fallen, half-eaten fruit without washing it is a very dangerous habit. » According to the World Health Organization, the Nipah virus becomes an infection caused by fruit bats and is potentially fatal to both humans and animals. In addition to respiratory disease, the virus can also cause fever, muscle aches, headaches, fever, dizziness and nausea.

« We had two outbreaks of Nipah virus before this; once in Kerala, once in West Bengal. During the last outbreak about 90 percent of the infected people died. Then we only had one case of the virus in 2019 and now in 2021 h But let’s have another case, a very fatal one. Hence, it is important to understand why this is happening, « said Biswas.

He added that the problem is global and several other countries near India, such as Bangladesh, have had repeated outbreaks of the virus.

On September 5, when the state reported the first death from the Nipah virus, the central government sent a medical team to Kozhikode District in Kerala. The team also visited the home of the boy who died of the virus and collected samples of rambutan. Local fruits to identify the source of infection.
