Russian defender Mario Fernandes was rushed to hospital on suspicion of a spinal injury after falling on his back during a European Championship game against Finland on Wednesday.
The Brazilian-born Right-back was carried on a stretcher in the 26th minute after prolonged treatment on the field. He had jumped for a header and couldn’t break his fall when he landed on his back. When he was carried off the field, he wore a yellow brace on his head and neck.
The Russian team said Fernandes was suspected of having damaged part of his upper spine and had been rushed to hospital for examination. The injury could contribute to personnel problems for Russia.

Veteran left-back Yuri Zhirkov was dismissed for the remainder of the tournament after injuring his thigh in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Belgium. Defender Fyodor Kudryashov is still to play after injuring himself in a pre-tournament friendly. Winger Andrey Mostovoy was replaced in the squad last week after testing positive for the coronavirus.
