Excessive heat warnings continue today in parts of Southern California and Nevada, where we nearly broke the global high temperature record over the weekend.

The hottest temperature ever on earth was in Death Valley National Park 134 degrees. This temperature was recorded on July 10, 1913.

That weekend, Death Valley came very close to this record, with highs around 130 degrees from Friday through Sunday. There was little relief overnight, as the minimum temperatures remained around 100 degrees.

The heat warnings for the region apply until Tuesday evening. The high temperature forecast for today and tomorrow is 127 and 125 degrees respectively, so the all-time record is unlikely to be broken.

What is the probability that this will happen in Michiana? The hottest temperature ever recorded in South Bend was 109 degrees, which happened on July 24, 1934.

Our thermometers don’t often climb above 100 degrees here. The last time was in July 2012 with a high of 102 degrees. Before that, our last 100 degree day was in 1999.

Here is the outlook for the rest of the month. Temperatures only have a 30 to 40 percent chance of being above normal. It’s unlikely that we’d suddenly experience extreme heat like the southwestern United States.

When traveling to this part of the country, a tweet from the National Weather Service Las Vegas reminds visitors to « stay tuned, stay safe, stay smart and stay hydrated « .

Or you could follow this cheeky advice from Twitter user Steven Ross: » Stay out of it. «
