CM – FIFA begins second leg of 2026 World Cup site inspections


After the first visits in September, FIFA has started the second stage of its inspection tour of the venues for the 2026 World Cup candidates in North America.

From October 21 to November 1, a delegation will be chaired by the President the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani visit Kansas City, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle USA and Monterrey in Mexico.

On every visit The group will meet with local stakeholders and discuss key issues such as event management, infrastructure and sustainability, as well as commercial, legal and legacy matters.

The visits also include inspections of key infrastructure such as stadiums, training facilities and potential FIFA Fan Festival venues.

On first visit Boston, Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, Washington D. C., Baltimore, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Miami will be the governing body.

The remaining US and Mexican sites as well as those in Canada will be visited by the end of November for an evaluation and finalizing the selection process in the first half of 2022.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition with an expanded format with 48 teams, with the tournament expected to be played in 16 venues accepted 10 cities in the country vied.

It had been widely accepted that three venues in Canada and three in Mexico would complete the host cities.

However, complications began when Montreal, Canada pulled out of the process and only Edmonton and Toronto left the country.

Behind the scenes, US cities campaigned for an increase in the number of American en venues to fill the expected void created by Montreal’s retreat.

However, the actual location of the Games will be based on the number of Games played in each country rather than the number of host cities.

The staging agreement stipulates that 60 of these games will be played in the USA, 10 each in Mexico and Canada.

Denver was the 1976 Winter Olympics ahead of Sion in Switzerland, Tempere in Finland and Vancouver in Canada Awarded at the 1970 session of the International Olympic Committee. But in a November 1972 referendum in Colorado, voters refused to fund the event. It is the only time that a city has won the Olympics but has withdrawn. The IOC then offered the games to Whistler in Canada, but they also turned them down due to a change of government after the elections. Salt Lake City offered to host the Games, but the IOC, still suffering from Denver’s rejection, declined and chose Innsbruck, the host city of 1964, as its replacement.

The football association and government partners of the United Kingdom and Ireland are conducting feasibility studies for a bid with five associations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This role will lead all marketing and communication activities during the offer feasibility phase. At this stage of the project, the role focuses on completing the strategic narrative, developing a brand, and implementing brand values, including creating a digital footprint.

The 30-year-old woman, who caused an accident at this year’s Tour de France in which many riders were seriously injured, is now facing a four-month suspended sentence. But as Mike Rowbottom points out, she is only the latest in a long line of viewers creating disaster.
