Players look to the referees after Bryant’s Juliette Golden meets Senior Guard Nia Clouden (24) in the second quarter. The Spartans beat the Bulldogs 100-60, leading trainer Suzy Merchant to her 300th win with Michigan State on November 19, 2021.

She reached her 500th career win on Tuesday, and today she achieved her 300th win in the Green and white after their Spartans fenced in the Bryant Bulldogs (0-4) in a 100-60 win.

« I just appreciate being a Spartan, » said Merchant. « I wanted to be someone who’d come out of high school, but I wasn’t good enough, I was more of a middle class player. … Where I’m from you’re either Spartan or Wolverine and we » I’ve always been a Spartan. Standing on the sidelines means something. … getting 300 is something. But now I’m looking for 301. «

In Bryant’s last game against Brown, the score was very similar to here in Breslin in the first quarter: extremely close.

The Bulldogs got the board going first, but got it quickly closed by the Spartans when freshman guard / forward Matilda Ekh knocked in a jumper from across the arch.

The Spartans had a bit of excitement in this game in their early five when junior guard Moira Joiner was out – she crashed into the Angry in the last 30 seconds of the game against Valparaiso on Tuesday and was found on the bench in warm-up clothing next to Tory Ozment (ACL) and Julia Ayrault (foot). Merchant said after the game that Joiner, although not a serious injury , currently has a concussion, but should be fine on Sunday.

« We need everyone every night. We don’t have much forbearance when it comes to (injuries) because we’re these eight core kids, « said Merchant.

Graduate Tamara Farquhar switched on for Joiner, working with graduate Alisia Smith, Junior Guard Alyza Winston, Senior Guard Nia Clouden and Ekh teamed up to give the Spartans a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Two minutes into the game, Farquhar caught a bad pass from Bryant’s junior guard Nicole Gallagher, which enabled both Winston and Ekh to The Spartans failed to capitalize and the ball was lost. « I really just want to do my part as well as I can, which is rebounding and defending, » said Farquhar. « I’m not concentrating (on the numbers I draw) while I’m playing. «

Farquhar found himself in the right places at the right time this morning, ending half-time with six points, three offensive n rebounds and two steals. By last summer she had 12 points, eight rebounds, one assist and two steals, which was close to a second double-double of the season. With 12 points and 10 rebounds, she took her first place against Valpo.

« She plays so hard. … She always goes on the boards consistently, she never gives in, » said Merchant. « She has this Robin [Lopez] mentality. I think someone once asked Robin, ‘How are you such a good rebounder?’ and he said, ‘Because after every ball I go and don’t. I never take a game out when the shot goes off « and I think that does (Tamara) on both ends of the floor. She finishes her games and we will surely need that, no question about it. «

The Spartans almost tripled their lead at halftime, with a team totaling 16 rebounds, 12 assists and eight steals, while shooting 59% off the field and 55% off the bow.

At the start of the second half, the Spartans had four players in trouble: Clouden, Ekh, Smith and junior striker Taiyier Parks had each collected three personals. Bryant also had three players in foul problems.

The aggression in the game was there, but the green and white remain cool, calm and collected.

Clouden recorded their first 20-point game of the season and finished it with 21 points, four rebounds, eight assists and two steals.

Graduate guard Laurel Jacqmain beat the three in the last three minutes of the game that brought the Spartans into three-digit numbers for the first time this season.

« I think their work ethic is except usually. If you look at the number of shots and the time she spends in the gym, I mean she shot twice as many as our fellows, « said Merchant. » She played behind some really good players and … I trust her, because she did this job … She’s the first in the gym, the last to go, she takes responsibility, she’s a smart athletic kid that we could employ, but her work ethic is exceptional and she’s very proud of that what she does … She earned the opportunity (minutes to get). «

» I was happy that Lo scores. I love it when she scores, she’s my best buddy, « said Clouden. « This is the first time we’ve reached 100 and that was the pre-game goal, so I’m glad (it worked). »
