CM – From Climate Change to Train Travel: What Joe Biden-Boris Johnson Discussed

0

US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed the dangers of climate change during an Oval Office meeting on Tuesday and joked about the joys of rail travel to underscore the US-UK alliance.

Johnson once feared his warm relationship with former President Donald Trump would affect relations among Biden, but the two men seemed to get on well.

Biden told Johnson he was looking forward to a conference later this year of the United Nations on global warming in Great Britain.

The UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow, which begins at the end of October, is considered to be a critical moment for the world to stop global warming. Under Biden, the United States has renewed its greenhouse gas reduction commitments and pledged to fund projects to combat climate change.

« It’s fantastic to see the United States really moving forward and showing a head start – a real, real one Head start, « said Johnson.

Trump, a Republican, had pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement. Biden reassigned the country to the international treaty after taking office in January.

The president said the two leaders would discuss trade at their meeting. The UK is looking to seal a US-UK trade deal.

« We’re going to talk a little bit about trade today, and we have to work that through, » said Biden.

Johnson took the Amtrak train off the UN General Assembly in New York to Washington to meet at the White House.

« They love you, » Johnson said to Biden, apparently referring to the US railroad staff. « Well they should, » replied Biden, who has been a regular commuter for more than 30 years, laughing.

Johnson’s team regards the visit as a triumph and shows that Britain is on the move after its divorce from the European Union last year World stage can be successful.

The meeting takes place in the midst of a dispute between the US and EU rival France, in which Great Britain played a decisive role. A submarine deal recently announced by the United States and Britain with Australia was at the expense of France, leading France to withdraw its ambassadors to the United States and Australia and cancel a defense meeting with Britain.

One simple relationship between the two men was not guaranteed. Biden, then Vice-President under Barack Obama, was angry in 2016 at Johnson’s statements that Obama was against Britain’s exit from the EU because he was « partly Kenyan ».

But the heads of state and government met in June friendly at a G7 meeting and appeared to be on good terms in the Oval Office on Tuesday, calling each other by their first names.

Still, the White House did not agree to hold a formal press conference with Johnson, and the British leader surprised U.S. Officials, answering questions from reporters in the Oval Office himself.

Johnson called two reporters from the UK press corps while Biden did not call either from the US side. The press was then led out to the screams of White House press advisors.

A post-Brexit trade deal is important to the UK, and Johnson noted that the US government had lifted a British beef import ban after an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease.
