CM – Gophers flirt with their first Indiana win in a decade before bowing to Hoosiers 73-60

The Gophers men’s basketball team flirted with their first win in a decade at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana on Sunday.

But after Minnesota took a 49-48 lead with 11 minutes remaining, Minnesota experienced a six-minute goal drought as the Hoosiers took control of a 73-60 win.

Minnesota (10-3, 1-3 Big Ten) haven’t won seven games in a row at Bloomington since 2012.

Minnesota, an underdog with 11 points, fell to 3-1 in street games this season, while Indiana (12-3, 3-2) improved to 11-0 at home.

The Gophers Defense worked to use the defense to limit Hoosiers star Trayce Jackson-Davis that came on his post hits. He was capped at four points in the first half, but Indiana’s shooters let Minnesota pay.

Five Hoosiers scored in double digits, with Jackson-Davis ahead with 13 points and Race Thompson from Minnesota adding 10 points.

Payton Willis sparked the Gophers comeback 39-29 at halftime. He had 12 points in the first eight minutes when the U took the lead 18: 5 and took a 47:46 lead. But Willis and the rest of the team cooled off on the track.

Willis finished 18 points and Jamison Battle led with 19. Starting shooting guard Luke Loewe was 0 for 8 out of the field.

It kind of worked. Jackson Davis, who averages 20 points per game, was held to four points in the first half and zero in the first 10 minutes.

Guards Rob Phinisee and Xavier Johnson made the Gophers pay. They combined in the first half for 22. Phinisee, who shot 27 percent out of three this season, made 4 out of 8 out of depth (50 percent) in the first 20 minutes. Johnson, 37 percent off 3, made 2 out of 4 for low. Parker Stewart also had seven in the first half, making his only 3.

The Gophers finished fifth in the nation in Sunday’s game, leaving their opponents only 26 percent able to shoot from a 3-point distance. Indiana shot 47 percent from depth in the first half and 37 percent in the game.
