Comedian and actress Hannah Einbinder received her first Emmy nomination for her breakthrough in hacks on Tuesday.
Even reading the pilot, the actress suspected that the series was going to be something special. She told Deadline that her nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress on a comedy series was « a relief and so beautiful, » simply because it once again showed how right her gut reaction was.
« I’m really just glad [ the show] touched people because it touched me, ”she said. “These characters are so close to my heart. Developed by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, Hacks focuses on the weird couple dynamics between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (binders), the titled 25-year-old comedian she takes under her wing.

When binder was first approached for the HBO Max show, which premiered in May, she resonated with the idea of playing an « imperfect » female character trying to get better.
« I think because she’s a woman, it’s – as a character, for some people – a harder pill to swallow. But to me and other non-masculine people, she is a real person that we all know, ”she said. “Well, I think it’s great to represent a flawed person who really has something good in them in this way. For me, it’s almost a step towards undoing these internalized, misogynistic ideas that have plagued our culture. ”
While Hacks was recently renewed for a second season, Einbinder said she didn’t know about the second Chapter of the series. « It is really a mystery to me at this point what will happen, » she said. « But when I know Paul, Lucia and Jen – and I think I do – it won’t be overlooked. » In the future, the actress hopes to see more of the multi-faceted dynamic between Deborah and Ava Makes her get the best out of each other even when they argue.
She also hopes to continue exploring acting after falling in love with her on the HBO Max series. « I definitely feel like I’m more queer characters, » she said. “I think a character that exists in my body and is not traditionally female is one of the areas I identify with the most and think it would be cool to see. So this is something like my vision board in the acting field. ”
Then there is also Einsteins career as a stand-up comic, which has been going on since its appearance in the New Faces showcase of the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2019 is gaining momentum. The Hacks star is currently doing stand-up all over LA and will soon be doing a monthly show in downtown Dynasty Typewriter. « Then I’ll just go out into the street, » she explained. « I have to do a few comedy festivals and some headlining dates all over the country and just work towards a kind of long-form performance piece. »
For binders, the « long form part » could well be a stand-up -Special act. « I think that’s every comedian’s dream, » she said. “Well, that would be so cool.”
This morning, Hacks got a total of 15 Emmy nominations.
