The ongoing heat wave triggered power outages on Tuesday and Wednesday that affected hundreds of Eversource customers.

Just over 100 customers in the Peterborough area saw outages on Tuesday after replacing a blown fuse had to, said William Hinkle, Eversource’s media relations manager. About 200 customers connected to the Eversource substation in Swanzey suffered outages when a cross arm also started burning on Tuesday, and about 100 customers in the Keene area experienced an outage around 10 a.m. when crews one on Wednesday Transformer replacements.

While Eversource typically cancels pre-planned repairs that would result in failure during heat waves, the repairs performed Tuesday and Wednesday were necessary to prevent major, out of control failures, Hinkle said.

« You can safely say that the heat wave and the resulting energy consumption have put a strain on the system, » said Hinkle on Wednesday afternoon. “We had to take steps in our service area, including the Monadnock region, to avoid prolonged, uncontrolled major outages,” he said.

Although Eversource learned that some customers had received fraudulent calls with indications of “rolling power outages” , This Has Not Happened: Rolling power outages are outages that systematically spin through the entire distribution region to lower overall energy demands, while the repair-related outages on Tuesday and Wednesday were isolated actions, Hinkle said.

Eversource offers ConnectedSolutions demand response programs that incentivize volunteer customers to reduce their energy consumption during peak periods, said Hinkle.
