With the elections in Uttar Pradesh only a few months away and the country grappling with the third wave of the Covid pandemic, the political parties are rising more than ever in the crucial state elections in India’s most populous state Set up digital campaigns.
The party leader and campaign leader in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, will go live on her social media pages later that afternoon to hear about the party’s women-centric campaign “ladki hoon lad sakti hoon (I’m a girl and I can fight) ”to speak. In a press release, the party said that during the interaction, workers and the public will both be able to ask Ms. Vadra questions.
The transition to virtual for Congress comes after a phone call was required a few days ago to suspend soil rallies and campaigns for a fortnight, the first party to make such an announcement in Uttar Pradesh. The decision came after a marathon organized by congressional leaders in the town of Bareilly, in which thousands of mostly exposed young girls participated in the event, resulted in a near-mass rush situation. The party says more digital campaigns will follow soon.
The Samajwadi Party has not yet issued an official statement on digital campaigns, but their social media warroom was also active during the 2017 general election, and sources say that The plan is to improve the social media game by many levels.
Perhaps a first step – the party tweeted links inviting people to join WhatsApp groups created by party workers in each of the 400+ Constituencies of the state are headed. One such group, which was reviewed by this reporter, had several pictures and videos of the party campaign, including the latest « Fark Saaf Hai » responses to a BJP social media and print campaign of the same name that has been running for several months and the Akhilesh Yadav government is targeting targets between 2012 and 2017 for “corruption” and “encouraging mafias”.
The BJP, which appears to be the leader in social media in election campaigns, has been bombarding newspapers with several completely- or half-page advertisements. Most of these ads feature photos of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and CM Adityanath with three main slogans – « twin engine ki sarkaar »; ‘soch imandaar, kaam damdaar’ and ‘fark saaf hai’. Similar messages have been going on in WhatsApp groups and Twitter handles of BJP followers for some time. The party also had robust campaigning on the ground until recently, but a senior IT wing of the party was quoted by local newspapers as saying that the focus in the coming days will be on using « 3D technology » to create virtual rallies to hold media in social networks. The party already has WhatsApp groups in each of the states 1.5 lakh plus voting booths.
Mayawati’s BSP, which uses Facebook to broadcast live physical rallies by senior leader Satish Chandra Mishra, may have to do a lot more to help Meet rival firepower on social media.
All parties also plan to use vans and trucks with LED screens to broadcast campaign videos across the state, especially in rural areas.
