Four minutes of stoppage time. Four minutes left for Afghanistan to find a winner in this game. Four minutes left for India to hold out and qualify for the third round of the Asian Cup.
Big test for India. They can afford a draw, but Afghans cannot. The result works for Igor Stimac’s team and if it doesn’t change by the final whistle India will finish in third place.
Brilliant work by Noor Husin on the left to keep the ball and to the teenagers Passing on the sensation Hossein Zamani, who comes up with a high-class finish. Aims at the far post with right foot and hits Gurpeet.
Ashique is injured. He is carried on a stretcher and Bipin Singh replaces him. A few minutes ago, Ashique’s run ended with a ball in the net after Suresh converted the chance, but the ball went out before the pass to Suresh.
A howling Afghan goalkeeper gave India a decisive lead with a goal in the game. Ashique sends a long ball into the box from the left, it looks like an easy shot for Ovays Azizi, but the goalkeeper doesn’t pick it up cleanly and the ball rolls back into the net.
Preview: After a moral win over Bangladesh the Indian soccer team wants to keep the momentum in the final game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying against Afghanistan.
If it isn’t a win, Igor Stimac’s team will at least try to draw against the Afghans and get an automatic starting place in the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. India currently ranks third in Group E behind Qatar and Oman with six points from seven games. Afghanistan are fourth with five points while Bangladesh are fifth with two points.
The lack of playing time for the Stimac players was a cause for concern, but India managed to show a decent performance against Bangladesh and they did so with two goals to beat the always reliable Sunil Chhetri 2-0. India had previously lost 1-0 to World Cup-bound Qatar.
Players like Chinglansana Singh, Brandon Fernandes and Ashique Kuruniyan also impressed in the previous game. Given the importance of the game ahead, Stimac won’t do much tinkering with his team.
Over the years, Chhetri has proven his worth in the national team and has become a legend that his team and manager depend on him again for to score the goal. The captain played 117 international matches and scored 74 goals – the second highest for an active international goal scorer worldwide.
