The team time trial is not seen as often these days and it required teams of six to start together, with time set on the fourth rider to cross the finish line at the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire.

This caused problems for some, including the day of Jumbo Visma, which was knocked down by a late mechanic on their fourth and time-stopping driver Pascel Eenkhoorn.

They still crossed the finish line with the best at this point Time, but his puncture meant he was fighting corners and the finish line and his team was losing a bit of time.

The former Verulam School student had a scary moment, a change that made him dangle worryingly from the end of the chain, but he tuned it back in and finished 57th overall.

The longest stage of the race, the field runs 210 km along the coast of North Wales between Aberaeron and Llandudno, with a detour through Snowdonia National Park in the legs in the second half.

The wind could be on the exposed coastal roads of the first part of the stage played a role. Fortunately for the drivers, even if maybe not for the audience, it is blowing from the land side and not from the sea.

Dan Martin announced his retirement at the end of the season and will wish that, but so do Julian Alaphilippe and Wout van Aert.

Ethan Hayter will be there too. Ineos know only too well how to control a race.
