Intel plans to launch its 12th generation Core processors (Alder Lake) in the second half of this year, but it looks like specs for three of these chips have been leaked before any official announcement are.
Alder Lake processors benefit from a hybrid architecture consisting of high-performance cores (Golden Cove) and highly efficient cores (Gracemont). As VideoCardz reports, the leaked specification confirms the hybrid nature of these new processors. These specifications came after Intel sent qualification samples to the company’s partners, which means they are unlikely to change before mass production.
The three chips are activated processors of the K series, consisting of a Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K. The specification for each is broken down as follows, with P-Core and E-Core each referring to the performance and efficiency cores:
The Core i9 is the only chip offering 16 cores, while the Core i7 has 12 cores and the Core i5 is limited to 10 cores. Even so, this is still an improvement over the maximum eight cores available for existing Rocket Lake processors, and clock speeds have improved slightly when compared to the Golden Cove performance cores with Rocket Lake chips.
Alder -Lake chips are desirable for a number of reasons in addition to the anticipated performance gains suggested above. They will be 10 nm Enhanced SuperFin parts, use an Intel Xe (Gen 12.2) GPU, sit in a new LGA 1700 socket, and support both DDR5 memory and the PCIe 5.0 interface. On paper they seem worth waiting for, we just don’t know how long to wait as the release window is undefined beyond the « second half of 2021 ».
Intel may not be too excited to see this information leak as his attention is apparently being diverted to other areas. It was revealed this week that the chip giant is in talks to acquire GlobalFoundries, which would mean that if successful, Intel could make processors for its competitors, including AMD.
