Patrick Cantlay may not think much of the controversial format for the Tour Championship, with a staggered start to reward the season’s accomplishments in the FedEx Cup, but he did enough to take the lead on the first round at East Lake that the system had given him.
Cantlay had criticized the format for the tournament at the end of the season with a cash prize of £ 10.8 million for the winner – « there has to be a better option, » he said – though it got him off to a start with two strokes over the next best place in the FedEx Cup standings and a lead of ten strokes over the lowest ranking players in the 20-man field.
