There are people whose names have remained immortal throughout the history of the planet due to their massive contributions to the advancement of mankind. One of them is Johannes Gutenberg, a 15th century inventor from Germany (in Mainz in what was then the Holy Roman Empire) who introduced moving pressure in Europe to start a revolution that helped enlighten the masses. The moving press led to « The Printing Revolution ». On Wednesday April 14th, Google dedicated a doodle to Gutenberg on the 21st anniversary of the Gutenberg Museum, which launched a retrospective exhibition about his life. The Mainz Museum started the exhibition on April 14, 2000 and it was also the 100th anniversary of the museum, which was founded in 1900, five centuries since Gutenberg’s birth. In the doodle, an artfully designed frame can be seen in which the word “Google” is mentioned in a traditional Gutenberg-style font. Instead of the two « o » from Google you will find images of the traditional printing press and the inventor himself. Below him you can see the inverted word « Google » as seen on a printing press.

Johannes Gensfleisch for Laden zum Gutenberg received an « official and symbolic date of birth » from the city of Mainz on June 24th, 1400. Gutenberg gained experience in metalworking – goldsmithing right from the start and coinage. Starting in 1436, Gutenberg used his knowledge of minting to modify a wine press to deliver ink on paper, while his metalworking skills were used to create a custom letter for the press. In the 1440s, Gutenberg perfected his research on the idea of a printing machine, which, however, was not to be put into operation until 1450. Although his idea flourished, Gutenberg was financially exhausted and bankrupt by 1456 over a court battle with Johann Fust, a lender. Later in his life, he received formal recognition for his creation when he was given the title of « Hofmann » in 1465, along with wealth. He died in 1468 and was buried in Mainz.
The museum, one of the oldest printing museums, is located opposite the cathedral in the old town of Mainz. The museum’s collections include printing equipment and materials from different cultures. The museum was founded to honor Gutenberg and to educate the masses about his technical and artistic achievements. They also aimed to exhibit the writing and printing of different cultures. Publishers, manufacturers of printing machines and printing houses donated books, apparatus and machines to the museum to enrich its collection. Originally the museum was part of the city library, but has been expanded over time to include sections on printing techniques, book art, commissioned printing, etc.
The Gutenberg project, the oldest library of digitized books, is also named after the pioneer of printing.
