By IRONMAN on August 10, 2021 Comments Off for Juneau selected as new host for the IRONMAN Triathlon

Juneau, Alaska / TAMPA, Florida – The IRONMAN Group in partnership with Travel Juneau, Minday announced that Juneau will serve as the new venue for a full-distance IRONMAN® triathlon. The kick-off event will take place on Sunday, August 7th, 2022, with general registrations on August 23rd.

“There has never been an IRONMAN event in Alaska before and we are excited to be working with Travel Juneau to make this amazing Presenting a travel destination that is Juneau, ”said Dave Christen, Regional Director of the IRONMAN Group. “This world class host city will bring a truly Alaskan experience to the IRONMAN community at every turn. The Juneau region is home to the Tlingit people and they share a value called Haa Latséeni, which means strength of body, mind and spirit. This goes well with what it takes to be an IRONMAN athlete and that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Not many people know that Juneau is just a short two hour flight from Seattle. Come and see for yourself, it’s amazing! ”

The local Tlingit people in Juneau have a rich and beautiful history and a local artist, Crystal Worl, was hired to create the IRONMAN Alaska logo. Your local Juneau store, Trickster Company, is a great place to immerse yourself in this beautiful formline art technique that will be highlighted in the identity of the new event.

“I am very excited about the cultural values of Tlingit – The art of sharing & on the territory of Áak’w Ḵwáan, ”said Crystal Worl. “The salmon symbolizes the strength, resilience and endurance it takes to spawn home. It is this salmon that brings nitrogen and nutrients from the deep sea into our land, which has allowed our land to become as lush and green as it is! It’s a great honor to be able to create the IRONMAN logo for my hometown of Juneau! ”

The first IRONMAN event in Alaska will span 140.6 miles of real Juneau territory. With a two-lap swim in beautiful, spring-fed Auke Lake, athletes begin the day with the breathtaking beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier in the distance as a line of sight. Once the athletes are out of the water, they will use the Glacier Highway to head north until the road ends literally 45 km from Auke Lake. The two-loop cycle route runs along the edge of the stunning Juneau coastline. The running route will use two historic trails in the area, including Montana Creek, as well as a loop around Auke Lake and Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei Trail to get back to the transition and onto their second loop.

« Travel Juneau is excited very much to welcome IRONMAN to our community, « said Liz Perry, President of Travel Juneau &. “We have a physically active, adventurous population and a surprising number of community groups in the running, trail running and cycling worlds. With over 250 miles of hiking trails combined with our mild coastal climate and the breathtaking Tongass National Forest, Alaska’s capital is a great destination for IRONMAN. We look forward to working with IRONMAN, our hospitality partners and the city of & Borough of Juneau to make the 2022 competition a success. «

Juneau is unique among the 49 US capitals in mainland North America, since there are no roads that connect the city to the rest of the state or North America. The lack of a road network is due to the extremely rugged terrain around the city. This, in turn, makes Juneau a de facto island city in terms of transportation, with all goods arriving and leaving by plane or boat, even though the city is on mainland Alaska. Located at the base of Mount Juneau and across the Channel from Douglas Island, Downtown Juneau sits at sea level beneath sheer mountains that are approximately 3,500 to 4,000 feet high. On these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large mass of ice from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of them, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Ptarmigan Glacier, are visible from the local road network.

The lively downtown Juneau is compact, easy to explore on foot and always popular with guests to visit historic sites, local shops and Visit pubs. Just a short drive from downtown is one of the city’s most famous spots on the edge of a residential area: Mendenhall Glacier. The glacier is located in the Tongass National Forest – the largest national forest in the United States. Whale watching tours are also a popular way to see the diverse marine life in the area.

« The & borough of Juneau is delighted that Juneau has been selected for an IRONMAN competition, » said Mayor Beth Weldon. « The 2022 event will be a great way to celebrate the city overcoming the effects of the pandemic and we warmly welcome IRONMAN athletes, staff and fans. »

General registration for the first IRONMAN Alaska Triathlon 2022 will open on August 23, 2021. The event offers qualifying places for the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship® in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
