As a 15-year-old girl from the United States at the London Olympics faced an intimidating array of competitors, including reigning Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain, in the women’s 800m freestyle final at the Overwhelmed by the Olympic Games in London, the world did not know that it was introduced to a swimmer who would rule the pool like no other.

She also emulated something of his size and finished the 2016 Games in Rio as the most decorated athlete – with four gold medals (200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 4 x 200 m freestyle relay), one silver medal (4 x 100 m freestyle relay) ) and two world records for her name.

Whether or not Ledecky and her team see the difference in their approach no, there are some elements in her technique that set her apart from the field.

Ledecky holds her body high so that her hips and thighs can often be seen above the surface of the water. This helps maintain balance and stability in the water.

Ledecky gives us the proof of the concept ourselves. She once swam with a cup of chocolate milk on her head – no spilling, no dropping – and called this one of the best swims of her career! It’s hard to disagree.

She also uses minimal kicks when swimming long distances, which helps stabilize her body position and optimize her swimming. In the 200 m freestyle, however, she records the number of kicks per arm stroke in order to gain speed.

Ledecky also mostly breathes on one side, which supports her rhythm during a race. The fact that she breathes every two strokes on her right side mostly distinguishes her from others.
