Four days after KTVU anchor Frank Somerville abruptly left the air during a newscast in which he was repeatedly indistinct and tripped over his words, the station management finally addressed the situation and said the seasoned newsman was going to on leave indefinitely.

Victoria Gurrieri, a New York-based spokeswoman for Fox – the network that owns and operates KTVU – said Thursday, “We can confirm that Frank takes time off his desk to focus on his Health and we welcome his return when he is ready. ”No further information was given.

Somerville, one of the Bay Area’s highest paid and most visible television journalists, alerted viewers during a news broadcast on Sunday evening (Jan. May), in which he apparently had difficulty reading messages from the teleprompter.

About 15 minutes after the broadcast, he was without explanation from the S desk disappeared. Co-host Julie Haener ended the newscast alone. The broadcaster has never confirmed whether Somerville voluntarily pulled out of the newscast or was pulled out of management.

Somerville has not been on the air since then. Until Fox made his brief statement Thursday afternoon, there was no public statement from KTVU or Fox or the anchor itself. That left KTVU viewers filling the void with online speculation, some of which did not put Somerville in the best light. </ However, many have expressed genuine concern about the veteran journalist who landed one of the most coveted jobs in the market in 2008 when he was named to replace Bay Area icon Dennis Richmond.

Since then, he and Haener have headlined KTVU’s Ten O’Clock News, which has long been the Bay Area’s top rated news program. There has not yet been a word from KTVU about who will take Somerville’s place on the podium would, but Heather Holmes made a touch up this week.
