Danica Patrick hasn’t ridden since the Indy 500 in 2018 and has since retired. But for today’s 2021 Indy 500, Patrick has a special role.

Before the start of the race, Patrick was shown as a pace car driver. Her tasks include leading the 33 drivers to the green flag in a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray hardtop convertible with mid-engine.

Patrick will only be the third woman to drive the pace car for the NASCAR event. Elaine Irwin and Robin Roberts did so in 2001 and 2010, respectively.

The official announcement of Patrick as a pace car driver came earlier this month. Patrick was also announced as part of NBC’s broadcast team for coverage of the event.

In a statement when the announcement was made, Danica Patrick called it an honor to be the Indy 500-pace motorist. She said it was especially meaningful given the year everyone has just held out. Patrick is also committed to Corvettes and looks forward to working with the NBC broadcast team. « I’m very honored to drive the Corvette Stingray Pace Car at the Indy 500 this year, » said Patrick. “It’s even more special because we all held out last year and it will be so nice to see the fans in the stands again. I’m also really excited to be back on the NBC broadcast team for the race.
