A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richterskala shook Bukidnon Province on Monday evening, June 14th.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake occurred around 10:38 p.m. and tracked its epicenter 11 kilometers northwest of Kadingilan, Bukidnon.

Phivolcs said the quake was shallow at a depth of 3 kilometers, hence the strong shock.

It was identified as a « strong » earthquake at intensity V felt in Kadingilan, Damulog and Don Carlos in Bukidnon and Wao in Lanao del Sur.

Phivolcs said it was « moderately strong » at intensity IV in Kalilangan, Kitaotao, Pangantucan, Kibawe, Maramag, Quezon and Talakag in Bukidnon; Cotabato City; Marawi City; Marantao, Lanao del Sur; and Cagayan de Oro-Stadt.

At intensity III it was felt as a “weak” earthquake in Pagadian City and Davao City and at intensity II as a “slight shaking” in Arakan, Banisilan and M’lang in Cotabato; Kidapawan City; Dipolog City; Datu Piang, Maguindanao; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur; Opol, Misamis Oriental; and Monkayo, Davao Oriental.

The Phivolcs instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity III in Cagayan de Oro City and Gingoog City in Misami’s Oriental and Kidapawan City in North Cotabato.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means that the quake was caused by the movement of an active fault in the region.

The strongest aftershocks to date were measured at magnitudes 5.0 and 4.7 at 10:49 p.m. or 10:59 pm.
