Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory in Bengal today, but lost her own in a cliffhanger in Nandigram to Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP former protégé. « I accept the verdict in Nandigram – it’s not a big deal. Don’t worry, » said the chief minister, but stated that she would appeal to the court for « mischief ».

Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari took turns leading in different rounds with a lead of six to 12,000.

Suvendu Adhikari was declared the winner with 1,736 votes, not long after the Trinamool tweeted: « The counting process for Nandigram is still ongoing. Please don’t speculate. »

The Bengali Prime Minister followed Suvendu Adhikari in the first counting rounds, which clouded her party’s euphoria over her spectacular victory. She scratched past him and had a lead of 1,200 votes that afternoon. When the results seemed to be going the way of her former lieutenant, she shrugged. « Let the Nandigram people make whatever judgment they want, I accept that. Nandigram was a sacrifice made for the greater victory We won the state, « she said.

» Whatever happened, it’s for the best. I won’t have to go that far on a regular basis now, I’m saved that way. But I will Go to court because I heard there was some grievance, « she said.

Nandigram is the city that catapulted Mamata Banerjee to power for the first time in 2011.

In 2011, Suvendu Adhikari, who had left this time to join the BJP, at the side of Ms. Banerjee when she campaigned for the land rights of the farmers. He became an MLA in the constituency and for years the Adhikari family had a firm grip on Nandigram. In this election, however, he was armed by the BJP against the prime minister, who was classified as an « outsider » in Nandigram.

The move from Suvendu Adhikari to the BJP in December resulted in mass defects that left Ms. Banerjee without many of her loyal helpers .

Ms. Banerjee was hit by Mr. Adhikari’s betrayal and decided to take the fight straight to his fortress to prove a point. She gave up her constituency of Bhowanipore in Calcutta. In her speeches, she said she made a decision to contest Nandigram « to welcome the Nandigram movement » and promised never to leave the constituency.

During the Nandigram election campaign, the 66-year-old prime minister suffered one Leg injury. She accused the BJP of a role in the incident in which her leg was allegedly crushed through her car door by the press in a large crowd. For the remainder of the campaign, she sat in a wheelchair and took collective power from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Interior Minister Amit Shah and several outside BJP leaders.

Suvendu Adhikari had vowed to leave politics if he joined Mamata Banerjee not defeated by more than 50,000 votes. Mr. Adhikari mocked his former mentor and asked her to finish a letterhead that read, « Former Prime Minister ».

In a tweet today, Mr. Adhikari thanked the « great people of Nandigram for their love, trust, their blessings and support « .

My sincere thanks go to the great people of Nandigram for their love, trust, blessings and support, and for choosing me to be their representative and the MLA of #Nandigram . It is my never-ending obligation to serve them and work for their well-being. I am really grateful!
