New information has been released on the events leading up to the tragic death of Columbus Blue Jackets goalkeeper Matiss Kivlenieks on July 4th.
This week brought one of Kivlenieks’ teammates – who was there when the Accident happened – a little more light on the events. According to Brian Hedger of Columbus Dispatch, Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins recently revealed that Kivlenieks saved his life, the lives of his wife and their unborn child.
Merzlikins said he hugged his wife about 20 to 30 feet behind Kiwlenieks, when the fireworks mortar exploded. The mortar struck Kiwlenieks in the chest, causing injuries that would eventually lead to death.
Merzlikins promised to name his son after Kivlenieks to commemorate his heroism. He said that he would miss Kivlenieks and called him a « brother » rather than a friend.
« He saved my son, he saved my wife and he saved me, » said Merzlikins. « My son’s second name will be Matiss … He died a hero. »

Matiss Kivlenieks left his home in Latvia aged 16 to play professional ice hockey in North America with a dream of playing in the NHL. After several years in smaller hockey leagues in the USA, he received his NHL shot at the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2017.
Kivlenieks made his NHL debut in 2020 and stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 2-1 win against the New York Rangers. He would make seven more appearances between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
On an international level, Kivlenieks became a regular for Latvia and made his debut at the Ice Hockey World Championship last spring. He led Latvia to their very first win against Canada when they finished sixth in Group B.
