CM – Mets Bullpen makes it big: « Enormous »

The bullpen was impressive in the Mets' 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

The Mets opener had thrown two innings last night and had not started a game for nine years. Her longtime helper had been smoked when he had started the week earlier. And of course it couldn’t have gone better.

What started out as a seemingly promising bullpen game turned out to be a strong performance from Tommy Hunter, Joey Lucchesi and three other reliefs who together earned a run over nine innings on a 4: 2 win on Saturday night against the Diamondbacks at Citi Field.

« The bullpen was enormous, » said Luis Rojas after Trevor May sealed the Mets’ fourth straight win. « The guys have really good things … and they’re going to come out. We saw that tonight and we’ve seen that for the last week or so. They threw really well. »

Hunter, a 14 year old Veteran, who was called up on Friday, took two goalless pictures on his team debut in the Mets 5-4 win that night. The 34-year-old Righty then only needed 17 pitches to book six outs without one goal opening the victory on Saturday before Lucchesi relieved him to open the third.

« I have an f-king No-hitter started, yes, I wanted out again, « joked Hunter after he » started « his first big league since 2012 with Baltimore. « I came to the Mets to win and I really think this team has a chance to win and I’m good at doing anything to win. »

Lucchesi had the game started on Monday in St. Louis and was awarded a 6-5 loss to the Cardinals that evening for six deserved runs, including two home runs. On Saturday, however, the left extended the Mets’ hit rate to five, aided by two diving catches from midfielder Kevin Pillar.

“I got in today and my arm felt really good. I have the feeling that I have mostly discovered everything, ”said Lucchesi. « I really don’t mind. I’ll start, I’ll relieve whatever they need from me, honestly. »

The Mets led 3-0 into the sixth round when Josh Rojas scored the first goal from Arizona scored with a leadoff single against Lucchesi. He moved up to second place on an error blamed on Pete Alonso while attempting a pickup and later scored an inexperienced run in the inning on David Peralta’s grounder.

Jeurys Familia was not one of the seven pitchers Rojas won on Friday night used but he fanned out the last two batters on the sixth Saturday after replacing Lucchesi. The former All-Star Closer allowed three singles with two outs – two in the infield – in the seventh before Christian Walker was put on a groundout with bases loaded to end the inning. That lowered his ERA to 0.93 over 11 appearances. Aaron Loup allowed a run to score in the eighth before May scored a goalless ninth goal for his first score of the season (closer to Edwin Diaz in the last two days). « Familia throws the ball so well, » said Rojas. « You talk about Loup and May how they threw, but Familia was excellent at helping close games as well. »
