CM – MotoGP: Triumph and Dorna extend Moto2 engine partnership

After signing a new contract with Dorna, Triumph will remain the sole engine supplier in the Moto2 World Championship for the next three seasons (2022-2024).

Since 2019, Triumph has been providing all Moto2 teams with race-optimized 765 cc triple engines are available, each based on the Street Triple RS engine. The racing engine turns harder and delivers a peak power of more than 140 hp – an increase of over 17% compared to the production engine.

The Triumph engine has broken several records since it was acquired by Honda. New lap records were set at 34 events, including records that have been broken and broken year after year. Meanwhile, the Triumph engine also drove Stefano Manzi to the very first 300 km / h top speed record in the history of Moto2 on Phillip Island. The record speed was reached in 2019.

« Moto2 was the perfect environment to demonstrate and prove the reliability and performance advantages of our triple engines, where the top 20 qualifying times were consistently within one second » said Steve Sargent, Triumph’s chief product officer. « Not only has it increased our profile and credibility on the world stage, for me the success of Moto2 was also an incredible catalyst that rekindled the passion for racing within Triumph motorcycles.

» I’m very excited to have been involved in this groundbreaking activity for Triumph and look forward to the extension for three more seasons drivers and teams. «

The power and torque increase of the Triumph engine as well as a more advanced electronics package seem to have a positive effect on the MotoGP graduates – which suggests that Dorna’s hopes of closing the gap between MotoGP and Moto2 are becoming reality.

Brad Binder was only victorious in his third appearance in the premier class, while Jo rge Martin has two poles and one win from his first seven MotoGP events. 2019 Moto2 world champion Alex Marquez secured two second places in 2020. All eyes will be on the Moto2 title fighters of 2021, Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez, when they join Tech3 KTM in 2022.

“Our first few years together have been a wonderful success and I want triumph for their help and theirs hard work during these first three years – especially during the pandemic, « added Carlos Ezpeleta, Managing Director of Dorna Sports.

» The FIM, IRTA and Dorna are satisfied with the results of this project and it confirms the consistency of the Steps between Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP. Overall, we are satisfied with the partnership and look forward to three more exciting years together.  » . «
