SPIELBERG, Austria: Jorge Martin from Pramac Racing fought off Suzuki’s reigning world champion Joan Mir and sealed his first MotoGP victory on Sunday at the Styrian Grand Prix, which was stopped and restarted after a fireball incident.
Pole-sitter Martin was under immense pressure from Mir, but crossed the finish line 1.548 seconds ahead of the Suzuki rider and gave Pramac his first MotoGP win of his rookie season.
Yamaha’s world champion Fabio Quartararo completed the podium and built his lead of 40 points over the pursuer Johann Zarco from Pramac, who finished sixth.
« I can’t believe it, » said race winner Martin. « What I did today was amazing. I kept a constant pace during the race and was super focused. Even though I made a few mistakes, my goal was to win.
» Joan was impressive today. He was behind me for most of the race, but I tried harder on the final laps, even if the front tire was destroyed.
The race was stopped on the third lap after KTM’s Dani Pedrosa crashed at the exit of Turn 3 and Lorenzo Savadori from Aprilia Racing hit Pedrosa with his crashed motorcycle.
The crash caused a fire on the track and the race was interrupted for more than half an hour. Pedrosa was unharmed by the incident and finished tenth in his first MotoGP race since 2018, while Savadori did not return for the restart.
KTM’s Brad Binder drove an impressive performance from 16th on the grid to fourth, while Honda’s six-time winner in the premier class, Marc Marquez, finished eighth.
The Italian Valentino Rossi, who announced his retirement at the end of the season on Thursday, finished 13th on his Petronas Yamaha.
