OTTAWA-
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) now recommends that people who have received a first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine receive a second dose of an mRNA vaccine such as Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

The latest advice from NACI takes into account the latest insights into the rare cases of blood clots associated with AstraZeneca vaccination and the increase in mRNA vaccine supply arriving on Canadian soil.

It is also said to have reviewed emerging evidence suggesting better immune responses. when a person receives a first dose of AstraZeneca and a second dose of an mRNA vaccine.

« There are more and more studies, especially from Germany, that we have collected between the last recommendations and today’s recommendations, and all of them essentially indicate that it is safe to provide a mixed dosage regimen, » Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam told reporters on Thursday.

« We will continue to see this in practice as the vaccines hit the market. »

For those getting their first vaccination with an mRNA vaccine, it is recommended to find the same product or use a different mRNA vaccine.

However, the advisory panel noted that those who have already received two doses of AstraZeneca can be assured that the vaccine will provide good protection against infection and very good protection against serious illness and hospitalization.

As of June 5, 2.1 million Canadians had received one dose of AstraZeneca and 15,186 people had received two doses. Of the 7,408 reports of undesirable side effects after vaccination with an approved vaccine since June 11, 1,565 are classified as « serious ». B. cause a severe allergenic reaction or a vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia.

The Canadian Vaccine Rollout Campaign Leader, Brig. Gen. Krista Brodie said there are still around 600,000 cans of AstraZeneca unused in Canada and it is up to the provinces and territories to decide how best to use them.

« We continue to assume that the use of these vaccines will evolve in the coming days, » said Brodie.

Dr. Tam acknowledged the frustration of Canadians who may feel misled by the body, but reiterated the challenges of dealing with a fluid health crisis that is constantly changing.

« I am fully aware that this is difficult for many, but I would say that those who received two doses of the AstraZenca vaccine, COVISHIELD, received good protection from infection. » ??? She said.

Montreal-based epidemiologist Dr. Christopher Labos told the CTV News Channel after the announcement that there had « clearly been some missteps ». in communication regarding the use of AstraZeneca.

“The point is to give two doses to each, and when you can tell that the second dose doesn’t have to be the same as the first, that gives you a lot more flexibility and makes you a lot immune to the variability of vaccine supply when they do So if I had put it this way, I think it would have been much more reassuring for people. he said.

The government continues to aim to receive 55 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by the end of July and is committed to providing full vaccination to any Canadian who requests vaccination by the end of September.
