Under the blazing sun at Kasumigaseki Country Club, Team USA’s Jessica Korda felt as hot as she ever was on a golf course.
But Korda still scored evenly in the first round of the Olympic golf tournament as she and her sister Nelly played well in temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
“I won in Thailand and I won in Malaysia. This is a completely « different heat animal, » said 28-year-old Jessica Korda, who is in 14th place. “If you feel that the cups are glowing, you know that it is pretty hot outside. So today the goal was to just stay there. ”
Nelly, who is 23 and is in first place, took second place in the first lap with one stroke behind the Swede Madelene Sagström.
Other members of Team USA didn’t fight the heat as gracefully. Lexi Thompson’s caddy Jack Fulghum, number 12 in the world rankings, left the match after the 15th hole. Thompson still had a strong finish, hitting three birdies on the second nine and making it to the second round.
« It’s so hot out there, » said Thompson. « I’m from Florida and I’m still not used to such bad heat. »
