The last time India failed to reach the final was in Bangladesh in 2003 when they finished third. India lost in the semifinals to eventual winners Bangladesh by a sudden death. Interestingly, FIFA got rid of sudden death the next year. After this heartbreaking defeat, India reached the finals in every subsequent edition and became the undisputed champions of South Asia. And why not, no other country as a nation in the region has the resources and manpower like India.
There is the Indian Super League, the I-League, the Durand Cup, the Federation Cup, the Santosh Trophy, the Rovers Cup, the IFA Shield etc. – which make India a real football nation. But their national team continues to languish in the lower echelons of world football. And the latest results, or rather the lack of them, against even lower-ranking neighbors represent a worrying trend that everything is a hoopla for Indian football.
After two draws in two games, India ranks fourth with two points Fives table. Gorkhalis, on the other hand, is at the top with six points from two wins in two. This will be their third meeting in a little over two months. The two teams played an international friendly with two games, with India winning the second 2-1 after a 1-1 draw in the first draw.
Nepal’s best result at the SAFF Championship was a 3rd place in the first edition in 1993 (Pakistan). In the last edition they were hidden in the semi-finals by the Maldives with 0-3.
Bangladesh (3 games, 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss) is currently in second place with four points. The Maldives are third with three points from two games (1 win and 1 loss). Sri Lanka is fifth with one point (3 games, 1 draw and 2 defeats).
