Derek Burnett made history in Tokyo when he was only the third Irishman to compete in five Olympic Games. The 51-year-old Longford shooter finished 26th in the men’s trap qualification today with a score of 118. Race walker Rob Heffernan and sailor David Wilkins are the only other two to have made five Olympic appearances for Ireland have, and Burnett has done well again. With only the top six progressing to the final, his result today meant he missed, and missing three goals on the first lap yesterday proved costly. He reacted well in the second and third rounds and only missed one target.
On qualifying day today at the Asaka shooting range, the participants completed their last two rounds, with Burnett picking up where he left off and two more 24-shots -Placed laps. He missed his first stroke of the day, but then got into his rhythm and ended his competition as consistently as possible. After Burnett made his debut on this stage in Sydney in 2000, with 118 points he is just one shot of his performance that earned him ninth place in Athens in 2004.
« That was the one who did all the damage I did Missed three goals and really, you’re out of the running after missing three goals, « he said. “You’re always pushing for a 25, but that just didn’t seem to be in the script here. I shot four 24s after that and they were all good, but at the level that is here at these Olympics, it’s just unbelievable. ”
When asked if he will be the only Irish player to participate in six Olympics in 2024 Paris wants to attend, he laughed and said, “Who knows? say, but I will definitely try. «
