The 93rd Academy Awards – also known as the Oscars – will be held tonight, and the film industry’s swanky showpiece will take place in two different locations for the first time since the 1950s – both in Los Angeles.
The Dolby Theater and Union Station will host the creams of the filmmaker’s harvest for Hollywood’s biggest night.
The star-studded night usually happens in February, but the Covid-19 pandemic has taken this tradition into account. The nominations were only announced in March by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas.
There are no permanent hosts for the Oscars this year, but four of last year’s winners – Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern – will play a role in the awards ceremony.
Despite the obvious differences due to the pandemic, the maskless ceremony (yes, you read that right) is meant to be produced like a movie, said head of ceremonies Glen Weiss.
It is usually just the die-hard film fans in Ireland who bravely stay up for the Oscars as coverage of the event begins at 1 a.m.
Irish viewers stocking up on energy drinks or vino tinto and burning the midnight oil can do that Follow the event on various channels and platforms.
Those of you who are Amazon Prime subscribers can also enjoy all the glitz and glamor live on the streaming service experience.
YouTube TV and Hulu subscription services will also broadcast the event, while Independent.ie has a full list of winners and losers on Monday morning.
The most nominated film this year is Mank – one A story about the origins of the classic film Citizen Kane – which received 10 nominations.
A number of films have received six nominations, including: The Father, The Chicago 7 Trial, Nomadland, Minari and Judas and the Black Messiah.
There is also an Irish interest in this year’s Oscars as Wolfwalkers is nominated for Best Animation Feature.
Wolfwalkers is produced by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny. This is the fourth nomination for the studio in this category and represents the best chance for many critics of winning the coveted award after three previous attempts, although it will face stiff competition from Disney’s Soul.
By Film- and book reviews to music features and the best of television and theater, entertainment has everything you need. Every Monday.
