Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess apologized for using an anti-Asian bow during a press conference hours earlier on Sunday.
The 27-year-old told reporters he could see she was smile even with face masks because their eyes looked “chi-y”.
In a statement posted on Twitter on Sunday, Funchess wrote, “I apologize for the derogatory remark I used tonight. It was wrong.
“I grew to build deep personal and business relationships in the Asian community! I didn’t mean it badly, and those who know me know that I love and respect all cultures and people. I will learn from it and continue to grow as a person. I’m forever sorry! «
The comment from Funchess comes as anti-Asian hate crimes have increased over the past year amid the COVID-19 pandemic and just a few days ago an Italian soccer team tweeted a photo that many considered racist Asian community.
On Thursday, Juventus Women released a picture of defender Cecilia Salvai with slanted eyes.
The team deleted the photo after 25 minutes, saying it “was not intended to cause controversy or having racist undertones may have offended someone. «
Funchess, a 2015 second-round pick from Michigan, is entering his first season with the Packers.
He signed a one-year contract last off-season $ 2.5 million at Green Bay, but dropped out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic.
