CM – Putin hopes the WHO will soon approve the Sputnik-V vaccine

A new report puts the total number of virus-related deaths in Russia from April 2020 to October 2021 at over 537,000 - almost double the official number.

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday expressed hope for the country’s Sputnik-V coronavirus vaccine to be quickly approved by the World Health Organization.

During a video call with Francesco Rocca, President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Putin said it was necessary to receive the WHO review in order to spread the Russian vaccine worldwide, including free deliveries.

The Russian leader also argued that WHO approval should open the door for Russians and others who have received the Sputnik-V vaccine to travel the world more freely . He said that around 200 million people around the world have received Sputnik V.

Putin was vaccinated with Sputnik V in the spring and received a booster dose of Sputnik Light, the single-dose version, last month. He also said that days after receiving his booster vaccination, he took an experimental nasal version of Sputnik V, adding that he felt fine and had no side effects.

The Gamaleya Institute that developed Sputnik V, said the vaccine should be effective against the Omicron variant of COVID-19, but announced that it would work immediately to adapt it to the new variant.

Russia became the first country in the world to receive Sputnik V in August 2020 Approved a coronavirus vaccine and has ample supplies. However, uptake has been slow, partly due to conflicting signals from Russian authorities.

Russia has faced the deadliest and largest spike in coronavirus cases in recent months, with infections and deaths rising to all-time highs and themselves have only slowed down in the past few weeks. Russia has the highest confirmed pandemic death toll in Europe at over 281,000, according to the government’s coronavirus task force. But a report published on Friday by the state statistics agency Rosstat, which uses broader criteria, puts the total number of virus-related deaths between April 2020 and October 2021 at over 537,000 – almost double the official figure.

Putin, despite a surge in Infections in Russia repeatedly argued that vaccinations should remain voluntary, stressing on Sunday that Russian authorities had tried to use « conviction, not pressure » and were working to « dispel prejudice and myths that drive aversion to vaccination » / p> Russia’s quick approval of Sputnik V caused criticism abroad because it had only been tested on a few dozen people at the time. However, a study published in February in the British medical journal The Lancet showed that Sputnik V is 91 percent effective and appears to prevent people who have been vaccinated from getting seriously ill with COVID-19.

Russia has actively promoted Sputnik V around the world however, faced with bottlenecks in the delivery of the promised quantities. Countries in Latin America have complained about delays in the second Sputnik-V admission.

The World Health Organization has reviewed data on the Russian Sputnik-V vaccine as part of the approval process. Such approval could pave the way for inclusion in the COVAX program, which delivers COVID-19 vaccines to numerous countries around the world as needed.
