After almost a decade of patience and anticipation, The Wallflowers fans had reason to wonder whether the band would actually regroup and release a new album. Surely the group had plenty to draw on, including six previous albums, a pair of Grammys, and a recently hit single, « One Headlight, » which was belatedly appeared in the Judd Apatow film The King of Staten Island.

Given the However, the fact that Jakob Dylan opted for a solo stint outside the band, highlighted by his prominent role in the high-profile documentary Echo in the Canyon from 2018, made one wonder if his own efforts had proven an irresistible one Urge to be in need of a full review. As it stands, Exit Wounds unveils a newer incarnation of the band, largely sharing a tenure that dates back only half a decade. As a result, the sound is slimmer, a little less rough around the edges and also solidly in sync. Shelby Lynn’s backing vocals can be heard on three of the tracks, most notably on “Darlin ‘Hold On,” in which she shares the lead role with Dylan.

Still, as the song titles suggest, Exit Wounds seems a generally dejected one Maintain setting. Songs like “Maybe your heart is no longer in it”, “I Hear the Ocean (When I Wanna Hear Trains)”, “The Dive Bar In My Heart”, “Wrong End of the Spear” and “Who’s That Man Walking ‘Round My Garden ‘suggests a dark desperation, a haunted notion that Dylan seems to be desperate to shake while simultaneously trying to reach higher ground. In fact, certain songs seem to skyrocket – fittingly “Roots and Wings” as well as the aforementioned “Darlin ‘Hold On”, “Move the River” and the telling title “I’ll Let You Down (But Will Not Give You Up ) “- which suggests that despite dangerous circumstances, he is still determined to stick to his course and somehow get things right.

Who is responsible for this idiosyncratic bus, he asks on the latter platform. They all fell asleep at once.

Dylan himself offers a ready-made explanation. « I just wrote when the world felt like it was falling apart, » he is quoted on Wikipedia. “It changes the way you address even the simplest of things because you’re always panic on your head. You are scared. And you have hope too. And it’s all in. «

Even so, Dylan still seems able to take command. And with Exit Wounds, the results point to that conclusive conclusion.
