The parents of Australia’s most decorated soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith, say they are « very proud » of their son on the eve of his libel trial, but say allegations of war criminal « destroyed » his life.
Len and Sue Roberts-Smith flew from Perth to Sydney over the weekend and will stay by their son’s side during the expected brutal 10-week showdown with Nine in federal court.
Ben Roberts-Smith, 42, is suing Nine and his journalists Nick McKenzie, Chris Masters and David Wroe over a series of articles alleging that he committed murders and war crimes while touring Afghanistan.
In a statement released on Sunday afternoon, the very private Mr. and Mrs. Roberts-Smith described the allegations against their son as « false » and also reported for the first time the effects on them and their son.
« The allegations not only destroyed Ben’s life, but have struck us every day for the past few years, » the couple said.
« We never expected our son to be attacked unfairly in this way after serving his country with honors and risking his life in Afghanistan.
« We are very proud of him for the father and son he is. We love and care for him as all parents love and care for their child.
« It is a relief that Ben’s legal team was finally able to bring his case to federal court. It will now be up to the judge to hear the evidence and deliver a judgment in due course. »
Len Roberts-Smith also served in the Australian Defense Force and became a Supreme Court Justice of Western Australia.
More than 60 witnesses are said to testify during the protracted battle between Ben Roberts-Smith and Nine.
The media giant has accused the Victoria Cross carrier of being involved in at least six murders on tours of Afghanistan.
Ben Roberts-Smith has denied any wrongdoing and is likely to defend himself later this week.
