Many Hampstead and Highgate residents celebrate the Jewish New Year with friends and family after missing personal events due to the lockdown last year.

The Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah, is an important festival on the religious calendar and lasts two days. This year it started on Monday (September 6th).

Led by Rabbi Oliver Joseph and Miriam Lorie, the participants enjoyed a meal together before exploring Rosh Hashanah, its rituals and how different Jewish cultures celebrate it .

At the Camden Jewish Museum, a special Jewish New Year exhibition called Beyond the Label invites visitors to « explore objects that show how this festival has been celebrated for hundreds of years ».

On Monday, Haringey Mayor Cllr Adam Jogee said in a video message, “As Mayor of Haringey, I would like to convey my best wishes to everyone who lives, learns, works, marks and celebrates these important occasions in Haringey . «

He added, » A new year begins with a fresh start, and I hope Rosh Hashanah brings a welcome fresh start for you and all of us. «

Also includes the Chair of Camden Council, Cllr Georgia Gould, wished the people on Twitter a year of “healing, recovery, sweetness and joy”.

Last year the synagogues could not be opened for the High Holy Days due to lock restrictions, even though some congregations were streaming live to their members. Services provided online.

This year, some places of worship are offering a hybrid system with face-to-face and live streaming services.

The Alyth Synagogue at Temple Fortune wrote on its website, “This year’s High Saints n days are more complex than ever. We acknowledge that some of our members are willing to return for face-to-face meetings while others are not yet.

« Our High Holy Day program reflects both of these needs, including a full online program similar to the one last year as well as an ongoing program of face-to-face services held at the Sternberg Center. «

Other congregations, such as the Highgate Synagogue, outlined the steps taken to keep the congregation safe while people prayed return.
