CM – Rumors have it that XCOM studio is developing a Marvel turn-based game

E3 is just around the corner, which means E3 rumors and alleged leaks are on the rise. Here’s a curious one: Firaxis, the studio behind the relaunched XCOM, is making a turn-based game featuring Marvel superheroes. The evidence to support the rumors of this ‘code name CODA’ is pretty thin, but well, before E3 is the time for gossip and speculation. In all fairness, I can imagine superpowers going well with XCOM-like action, but hasn’t XCOM 2 already given soldiers so many more interesting and diverse skills than your average Marvel wizard?

The rumor chain is: Someone on Reddit says someone told them Firaxis was making a turn-based action game, with their source calling it « XCOM with Marvel Heroes ». And supposedly famous actors speak characters, though that’s vague enough to mean everything from famous voice actors like Laura Bailey and David Hayter to real-life Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth. That’s it. No evidence, just second-hand whispers.

The rumor was supported by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. He tweeted, « Yeah, this 2K leak is real, but I’m not sure it’ll all be at E3. I can’t wait to see Marvel XCOM, though. » Also not a source from him.

Superhero powers could certainly work in an XCOM-like game. Attacks, defense options, support powers, movement skills, combos, they’re all there. XCOM 2 already offered quite a lot of superhero powers, then its expansion boosted that with ridiculous options (« We’re far away in superhero territory now, » said Alec Meer in our XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen review). Marvel wizards sound mundane by comparison, constrained by their comic book counterparts. Perhaps a more accurate comparison would be Chimera Squad, the 2020 cop spin-off that featured a number of different characters with personal skill trees (see our XCOM: Chimera Squad review for more information.)

I mean, not, that we know this Marvel game is real, or that we have an idea of what it actually is, or that it is ever a good idea to assume that a game you know nothing about is basically the same thing is like another game the studio made. Take it all with a sip of salt (tuck! Tucker! Tucker! Tucker! Wuuuuuaaaayyy!).

The initial rumor maker also mentioned a Borderlands spin-off with Tiny Tina and a new game currently known as « Codename Vault » and that their source calls « Cthulhu meets Saints Row ». Again only second-hand whispers.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Firaxis and 2K and publisher of Borderlands, are presenting themselves at E3 this month. Haven’t said yet what they’re going to show on Monday the 14th, so maybe it could be some of this? Or it could be none of the above. E3 will also bring Marvel news from Square Enix about the upcoming Black Panther update for their Avengers game. Check out our E3 2021 plan for information on these showcases and much more.
