Russian mining and metals companies are increasingly relying on renewable energy to meet their energy needs, according to a new report from Deloitte and the Climate Global Initiative Russia.

About a third of Russian mining companies use renewable energy to meet 80% of their energy needs, according to a survey distributed by the report’s authors. Around 70% of Russian miners say they have taken measures to identify climate risks, while 50% of these companies have publicly announced their climate strategies.

Polyus Gold supported the survey. The company announced in April that it now gets 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources.

The results echo a report published in Climate magazine that found that more than 30% of the leading hydrocarbon, Russia’s chemical and mining companies referred to environmental concerns in their mission statements.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a longtime climate change denier, is reportedly changing course as he realizes that Europe may cut back on Russian oil and gas when it doesn’t use methods to reduce its carbon emissions, Bloomberg reported on Oct. 5.
