Logan Sargeant says he is shifting his focus back to a future in Formula 1 after being offered a position at the Williams Driver Academy after being near an IndyCar seat in 2022.
The American was due to test for AJ Foyt Racing at Barber Motorsports Park on Monday after seeing few opportunities in Formula 2, but last week talks with Williams got serious that led him to join the team’s academy. With Sargeant moving up to F2 alongside the role, his Foyt test has been canceled and he says he needs to focus fully on reaching F1.
« This was all very, very new, » said Sargeant towards RACER. “So it’s still very fresh. My manager called me and I wasn’t sure if he broke me up or not! It’s a great opportunity – I’m very excited about what’s to come and I’m ready.
« Yup, (the Foyt test is off); the priority has shifted. Start here and try to get involved as soon as possible. I think I’m needed in the factory so I don’t think (IndyCar) is on the table. I know what I’ll do next year, but I can’t say anything yet.
“What is going on here is again about focusing solely on F1. I’ll just focus very closely on it, I’ll grab this opportunity with both hands and do whatever I can to get there because that’s what I’ve been aiming for since I was a little kid. «
Sargeant says that Williams said an opportunity was one that revived his hopes of reaching F1, which looked less likely as he was unable to advance in Europe after finishing third in the 2020 FIA F3 Championship.
« Absolutely. We’ve really considered all of the options year round and this one is obviously the best – an opportunity you can’t turn down. Not to mention, they (Williams) are going through a really good transformation on and off track right now, with Dorilton owning them. So I think there are really exciting times for the future and I’m excited to be a part of it.
“I just want to do what I can to help you wherever you need me. At the same time, I want to learn as much as possible, use its advantages – training, simulator, all of that – to make myself better. I think we can both help each other keep going. ”
With F1 teams having to use rookies in two FP1 sessions next season, Sargeant adds that the details of a track time with Williams need not be described just yet .
« I don’t know, it’s up to you at the end of the day, » he said. « I would like to do it, but you have to decide that. »
