The best college football conference, the SEC, has been dominated by one team lately: Alabama.
The Crimson Tide have won five of the last seven SEC titles and have just finished another season winning the SEC championship game and college football playoff completed.
Texas A&M was hot on their heels after beating all of their other opponents, but the Tuscaloosa game ended in defeat. Florida ousted Georgia only to be devastated by the SEC Championship flood.
The Crimson Tide, however, come into play this season without many of their offensive stars from last season; Quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and Heisman winner DeVonta Smith were all drafted in the first round.
It says a lot about Nick Saban’s program that the Crimson Tide is still an overwhelming favorite, to win the best conference in the country despite losing so much talent in this year’s draft.
Here are the odds, via FanDuel Sportsbook, to win the SEC for each team, as well as their over / under totals for the coming season:
AlabamaAlabama is the obvious favorite behind five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Young on offense and the three linebackers of the All-SEC first team from the preseason (Will Anderson, Christian Harris and Henry To’o To ‘o) On the defensive, however, their schedule is a bit tricky with street games against Florida, Texas A&M and Auburn as well as a neutral game against Miami.
The Crimson Tide is likely to be preferred in all of their games and will be preferred at the end of the Make up a decent percentage of the All-SEC team this year, but it’s not worth wagering that they’ll win the SEC at current price, so we’ll look elsewhere for our best futures bet.
GeorgiaGeorgia brings quarterback J.T. Daniels and seven other returning starters on the offensive, and they avoided potential West Division opponents in Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. Their toughest game is in a neutral place against Clemson to open their season.
The Bulldogs arguably have the best line of defense in the conference behind preseason All-American Jordan Davis, who is also a top NFL in his position – is a candidate. However, their odds are also too short, which means that none of the most likely teams to win the SEC are particularly valuable bets, although both the Tide and Bulldogs are the most likely teams to make the SEC championship > Texas A&MTexas A&M has the third best odds to win the conference and showcase the highest value in a futures perspective. The Aggies are one of three West Division teams placed in the preseason poll (Alabama and LSU are the others), and they have a much simpler schedule than both the Tide and Tigers.
Texas A&M doesn’t have to play Florida or Georgia, and they can play Alabama at home. While the Aggies have fluctuated in the quarterback position with Kellen Mond drafted into the NFL, they are giving back all of their skill position players, including running back Isaiah Spiller and tight end Jalen Wydermyer, both of whom were SEC only last year -Teamers were and these were named preseason All-SEC teamers this summer.
Although Jimbo Fisher has not yet named a quarterback for this season, the depth and talent of the backs and receivers around the job winner will be enough to to compete with the best teams in the country.
LSUCoach O’s Tigers come from a 5-5 season in which they were upset in two of their first three games by Mississippi State and Missouri. The LSU was a double-digit favorite in each of these competitions.
The Tigers rallied with wins in Florida and against Ole Miss. While bringing back 18 starters, they have a brutal five-game stretch on their schedule against Auburn, in Kentucky, Florida, at Ole Miss and in Alabama.
Once again, the Tigers become one of the best defenses in the Landes, led by Derek Stingley, who continues LSU’s tradition of employing one of the best defensive players in college football. The LSU just doesn’t have the offensive firepower to consistently win games against the top contenders in the SEC, however, so they’ll likely struggle to get eight wins to get their overall bet.
AuburnAuburn is below on the odds list, and they stand a slim chance of winning the SEC on one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Tigers have street games in Penn State, LSU and Texas A&M and pulled Georgia out of the East Division.
Bets under 7.5 for Auburn make sense as they are likely in all four of the above games as well as against Alabama Will be outsiders. Ole Miss is also not to be missed under sophomore coach Lane Kiffin.
Although Auburn is a talented team, they start the season with all newcomers at wide receiver, which gives Bo Nix limited opportunities in the passing game.
The Tigers just don’t have the staff to keep up with all of the offensive juggernauts on their schedule, so here’s under 7.5 wins.
ArkansasArkansas is building its sophomore program under the coach , Sam Pittman, is still up and will likely finish last in the Western League on one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Razorbacks could still surprise and finish with over 5.5 wins.
They have three winning games against Group of Five teams, and they also face SEC opponents Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri (the Missouri Game will be played in Little Rock).
Arkansas also returns 19 starters from last year’s team who were underdogs in all 10 games and won 3.
The Razorbacks have led a talented group of receivers from Treylon Burks, who finished fifth in the Conference in Received Yards last season. If Burks and the Offense can keep the chains moving consistently, their defenses (led by All-SEC runners-up Grant Morgan as linebacker and Jalen Catalon) should keep them in enough games to exceed their aggregate wins.
South Carolina The South Carolina total winnings also offers some value. The Gamecocks are likely to be favored in all three of their group of five games under their senior coach Shane Beamer. The rest of their schedule is tough, mostly because their other non-conference opponent is Clemson, but Vanderbilt and Tennessee are winnable games for them.
South Carolina doesn’t have the same talent as programs like Georgia and Florida, however they are returning productively, Kevin Harris and most of their offensive line.
An opponent like Kentucky is certainly better than South Carolina on paper, but new starters on the central defense line could cause trouble against Harris and Co. for the Wildcats. Such excitement would likely get them over four wins, so bettors should consider the over.
– Texas A&M wins SEC (1200) – LSU under 8.0 wins (115) – Auburn under 7.5 wins ( -135) – Arkansas over 5.5 wins (-105) – South Carolina over 4 wins (125)
