It was a fatal flirtation, and in Lifetime’s upcoming film « Secrets of a Marine’s Wife » we see 19 year old Erin Corwin (Sadie Calvano) having an affair with her 27 year old neighbor Marine Christopher Lee (Tom Stevens), which would eventually cause her to lose her life at his hands. To add to this horrific tragedy, Erin was expecting Lee’s child. The film is based on a true story based on the Erin Corwin case, who shocked the nation in 2014 when the missing pregnant nineteen-year-old was finally discovered in a mine shaft two months later after a grueling search. While Erin’s husband, Major Jon Corwin (Evan Roderick), also a Marine, was initially the prime suspect, it soon emerged that it was indeed Lee who killed her.
Lee admitted the crime and said it was a Passionate crime. But oddly enough, it wasn’t jealousy or a lover’s disagreement that Lee claimed was the reason he strangled Erin. Lee claimed to have killed Erin for admitting molesting his young daughter, with whom she often spent time. At the time of the trial, he said, « I was controlled by anger. I never wanted to experience the hatred I felt that day again. » If you like movies about real crime, then other lifetime movies like Gone Mom: The Disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, Girl in the Basement, and A House on Fire should be of interest.
Lee’s claims, Erin molested his daughter was viewed by many as simply a desperate attempt by Lee to divert blame for Erin’s death. The California court found in its ruling that « no one ever raised concerns about Erin’s interaction with the child [Lee’s daughter], » whom she looked after from time to time. But how did what started as a simple flirtation turned into a disaster that cost Erin’s life.
Both Erin and Lee had difficulties in their marriages. Erin and her husband became more distant, especially after she miscarried. With her husband often on duty for weeks, Erin apparently began to seek solace in Lee’s attention. While it was just a distraction for Erin and Lee, who were both unhappy in their marriage, it seems that real feelings are soon developing. Lee even wrote a love letter to Erin, which makes the brutality of her murder even harder to understand.
Lee has been willful and inconsiderate in the past when it comes to guns, and other Marines reportedly saw him often use guns and used rocket launchers like they were toys. This in combination with a darkness in his personality that Erin may have drawn to him and vice versa, since he felt another troubled soul, created a strong combination for disaster. Perhaps when Lee found out Erin was pregnant with his child, Lee began to panic and feel overwhelmed and could lose his livelihood and family.
While Lee may have insisted that Erin’s murder was not premeditated , he was nevertheless found guilty of first degree murder. Lee is now incarcerated at the California Institution for Men and the ex-Marine will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars.
