CM – Silicon Valley Classic: Danielle Collins beats Daria Kasatkina and takes the second WTA Tour title in two weeks


Collins, the 27-year-old who finished 14th on the 2021 tour for the first time with her clay court title in Palermo last month, kept the momentum on the hard courts of California with a 6-3, 6-7 (10/12) ), 6-1 win.

San Francisco: American Danielle Collins took her second WTA Tour title just two weeks after her first win with a hard-fought win over Daria Kasatkina in San Jose, California on Sunday.

Collins, the 27-year-old, who was the 14th first time on the 2021 tour with her clay court title in Palermo last month, kept the momentum on the hard courts of California with a 6-3, 6-7 (10/12.), 6-1 win.

It took longer than it could have been, the seventh-seeded Collins served 5-3 for the game in the second set, but left five match points begging when the fourth-seeded Kasatkina forced a decisive third set.

Collins had lost her two previous games against Russian Kasatkina, including a semi-final defeat at the Phillip Island Trophy in Melbourne that year.

But after Kasatkina had scored the tiebreaker in the second set with her fifth setpoint, she was able to Collins, who ranks 36th in the Wel t was and would likely return to the top 30 after the win, calm down and regain the upper hand.

Collins converted five of her eight breakpoints in the match, breaking Kasatkina in love for a 5-3 lead in the first set. </ Three aces in a row and a service winner in the next game gave her the opening frame, and Collins made an early break in the second game.

But when Collins failed to use two match points against Kasatkina’s serve in the ninth game of the second set, it started the Russian to gain ground.

She broke Collins to level the set and took a 4-0 lead in a tiebreaker that would eventually bring the American three more match points before Kasatkina finally leveled the match.

Collins finally secured the advantage with a break to make it 3-1 in the third and finally sealed the match with her seventh match point.

The exhausted American could not even have a feie Called a fist and was checked by a trainer on the field before he turned to the crowd and hoisted the trophy at the award ceremony.

Nadal will return to competition at the Citi Open on Wednesday night, making his debut in the hard court tuning tournament for the US Open.
