WASHINGTON: After a painful week of vacation with flight cancellations and record increases in COVID-19 cases, a strong winter storm has come on Monday (Jan. 3) further messed up US traffic and closed the federal government and schools.

Many Americans have made efforts to return home after Christmas and New Years since the 24th.

Almost 3,500 flights on Monday, the first working day of 2022, were canceled as early as 9.45 a.m. (1445 GMT), according to flight tracking website FlightAware, including 2,000 US or international flights that start or end in the US.

Together with 2,700 US flights scrapped on Sunday and 2,750 grounded on Saturday, recent cancellations exacerbated the vacation travel misery.

« Hey @SouthwestAir, can you stop checking every single flight from DCA (Washington National Airport ) to s cancel? I have to go home! « Passenger Kyle Hughes wrote on Twitter.

More disruptions hammered on the capital and other parts of the mid-Atlantic as a winter storm, with official forecasts of 12.7 cm to 10.4 cm of snow in Washington .

« Heavy wet snow and gusty winds could result in dangerous travel conditions and isolated power outages, » reported the National Weather Service in its latest warning, warning of possible « thunderous snow », which includes lightning and thunderbolts. </ p Federal officials in and around the capital were ordered to stay at home, but with teleworking becoming routine during the two-year coronavirus pandemic, it was unclear how much the government would hit.

Chicago and Atlanta airports, the most important transport hubs, as well as Denver, Detroit, Houston and Newark were badly affected over the weekend, and the east coast airports in New York, Washington and Baltimo were canceled by Monday re most of the flights.

A woman named Kayla described her own ordeal on Sunday: « I was supposed to be home at 10:30 am yesterday morning. At this point, 3 flights were canceled and one was delayed so much that I missed my connection. «

Air traffic around the world over the holidays has stopped due to airline staffing problems related to the spread of the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus Variant suffered.

Many pilots and flight attendants have called in sick after testing positive or being quarantined because of contact with someone who has the virus.
